Live Adventurously

In 2004 a major exhibition of Ron Waddams' work was shown in the Chapter House of Canterbury Cathedral. The exhibition provided a rare opportunity to see the development in style of Ron Waddams.

Of the 45 paintings on display, the earliest 'Child of our Time' dated from 1967 and introduced the powerful idea of the strength required for effective peacemaking. This builds to 'NVDA' (1973), a forthright statement that confrontation can be vigorous and yet retain respect between opposing forces. The artist uses sharply defined, sweeping areas of bold colour, perfectly suited to the steady focus of his theme.

In the chronologically arranged exhibition, many aspects of opportunities for progress are explored. The shadows of brutality are here, as in the exhibition's 8ft by 4ft centrepiece, 'Lamentation and Resolution' (1983), in which the harrowing memory of the massacre at Chatila in Lebanon is commemorated in sombre tones, yet retaining the resolve to remedy the madness which drives men to war.

There is also much joy in the exhibition, increasingly apparent in the recent work. The artist is able to catch the vision of the emerging 'green' movement, particularly in the sublime 'Oneness of creation' (2002). It is rare to see such breadth of vision so refreshingly expressed.
